Shepherd Huts with a Shower – Things to Think About

A shepherd hut with a shower has the potential to be a cosy and fully self-sufficient retreat, but there are a few considerations to keep in mind. From water supply and drainage to interior design, here’s what you need to think about if you’re looking to purchase a shepherd hut with a shower.

Do Shepherd Huts Need a Shower?

Adding a shower to your hut is entirely optional. Granted they take a little more planning and power, but we highly recommend them.

Whether you plan to use the hut personally, or want to rent out to guests, an incorporated shower makes your hut the envy of the glamping world. Who can deny the pleasure of a steaming hot shower after an afternoon rambling in the countryside? Or the satisfaction of avoiding a communal shower block? Your guests will be forever grateful to you for providing a secluded and convenient shower.

A shower may be less necessary if you plan on utilising your hut as a playroom, office, or even a library. But then again, a shower only helps make your hut the perfect independent retreat from home.

Do Shepherd Huts Have Enough Room for Showers?

The secret Tardis of the countryside, shepherd huts are deceptively large – we think you’d be surprised just how much you can fit into your hut.

Greendown Shepherd Huts’ Double Hut, for example, is a double-sized large shepherd hut with a bathroom included. Designed and created from two luxury 20ft huts, the hut is incredibly spacious and possesses all the charming features of a standard shepherd hut, only with more space.

In addition to a full-sized shower, vanity unit with sink, towel rail and concealed toilet, this hut also can also include a full kitchen and a full-sized double bed.

So yes – shepherd huts can definitely have enough room for a shower!

Consider the Interior Design

Once the sizing and layout of your hut have been decided, you will want to consider the design of your shower room.

Will you want oak walls in keeping with the rustic and authentic feel of the traditional shepherd hut? Or maybe you want a contemporary design using glossy tiles for a modern feel?

We’d definitely recommend a window for your hut’s bathroom – not only will it flood the room with golden light, but it will also aid ventilation. Just be sure you have frosted glass for privacy!

Consider Additional Features

A simple bathroom with the fundamentals (toilet, sink and shower) is certain to please guests, but more can be done to elevate your bathroom. Here are a few ideas:

If space is particularly tight, consider a storage ladder to display all the essentials, such as towels and spare loo rolls.

A heated towel rail is a great way to save space and treat your guests to extraordinary comfort.

Hanging a large vanity mirror above the sink will make your guests feel exceedingly glamorous while stocking a shelf full of luxurious creams and aromatic scents guarantees a spa-like feel.

What Requirements are Needed for A Shepherd Hut with a Shower?

If you are considering having a shower in your hut, careful planning will be needed when it comes to water supply, drainage and power.

Power Supply: Electric showers typically require 7.5kW–10.5kW, drawing 32A–45A, so ensure your electrical system can handle the load. Consulting an electrician is essential.

Off-Grid Considerations: While shepherd huts are often designed for off-grid living, powering a shower can be challenging. Solar panels may not provide sufficient energy, making gas water heaters a preferred alternative. However, these still require a fuel source.

Water & Drainage: Plan for a reliable water supply and an appropriate waste system, whether it’s a soakaway, drainage system, or greywater collection.

Planning Permission: If your hut is sited in the garden of your residential property, you’re unlikely to need planning permission. If, however, you’re a business and/or plan on renting the hut for financial gain, planning permission will most likely be needed. In all circumstances, it is best to speak to your local council to discuss the requirements.
