Garden Office Ideas – Creating the Dream Home Office in Your Garden

Having a dedicated space to work in your home is a great benefit. Instead of trying to balance a laptop on your knees while watching TV, being able to go to a specific room that you can call an office means you can get your work done quickly and effectively.

Let’s be realistic though, not everyone has the luxury of having spare rooms in their home that they can casually turn into an office.

But, those with a garden may have the space to create a little garden home office that can be the perfect space for getting work done.

With so many garden office ideas out there, we’ve listed down a couple of ideas we think are great solutions, either for price, convenience or longevity.

Garden Office Ideas

If you’ve got a garden or bit of land and you want to get the most out of it, don’t hesitate to get in touch with us here at Greendown Shepherd Huts. We can help listen to what you’re looking for and guide you in the right direction.

So, back to garden office ideas – how can you create a garden office?

  • Shepherd Huts

We may be a little biased here at Greendown, but we think shepherd huts are perfect for using as a home office. With our 12ft shepherd huts, you can fit it out with a table, chair, and all the necessary things you need for getting work done. It can also include a kitchen area so that you don’t have to pop into the house if you want a coffee/snack.

Bespoke shepherd huts are also great for those who want to be a bit more creative and perhaps need to be more space-conscious. These can be created to your requirements, helping you end up with something perfect for your garden.

If you’re looking for inspiration while you work, a shepherds hut is second to none.

  • Self-Build Cabin

If budgets are tight and you consider yourself a bit of a handyman, then building a cabin from scratch could be the best option. Self-builds are not easy and involve careful planning and a lot of hard work. Nevertheless, they can allow you to create something very tailored to your garden.

If you’re thinking about a self-build, even for something like a garden office, it’s worth consulting a professional and getting advice on creating the actual structure. You don’t want to get half way through and realise the walls aren’t strong enough to support the roof.

The advantage of a self-build is that you can leverage any material you can find – spare timber, old bricks, you name it. This can give a very rustic but characterful building.

  • Pods

Another potential option is looking at garden pods. These come in a range of shapes, sizes, and prices, so you can find one most suitable for your circumstances. These pods are like sheds but benefit from a better interior/exterior and are designed to be suitable for working/living.

Depending on the materials used (timber, metal, glass), the character and atmosphere created within these pods can be very different. Large glass windows and doors helps create a light and welcoming space. Timber is also likely to provide a more aesthetic finish than metal but that really depends on personal preferences.

  • Converted Garden Shed

Converting the current garden shed is probably the cheapest option and the quickest to implement. It does have a few drawbacks that do make this option somewhat challenging. Firstly, sheds aren’t insulated, so you’d ideally need to address that. If not, it’s probably not going to be a nice space to work in. They also aren’t necessarily water-tight and if you’ve got cables and electricity points going into it, you’ll want to ensure it meets basic safety standards.

Due to all these elements, converting the garden shed may prove more effort than originally anticipated, but it’s still an option.

Things to Think About

Regardless of what style of building you pick, there are a few things to think about before you get started.

  1. Insulation

It’s important that your building is well insulated. If not, it’ll be too hot in summer, and too cold in winter. Insulation is very important, particularly if you’re self-building. For those buying a shepherd’s hut, they come fully insulated, ready for any weather conditions (our huts even come with underfloor heating!)

  1. Purpose

Although the primary purpose may be an office, some buildings, such as a shepherd’s hut, can also double up as a living space/bedroom. Although this may not be required all year round, for those big family reunions, knowing you have additional sleeping space can be a real benefit. There are many uses for shepherd huts.

  1. Planning Permission

It’s always worth seeking planning permission for any construction or renovation in a garden, particularly if you live in a city/urban area.

For any questions about the planning permission required for shepherd huts, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with us here at Greendown Shepherd Huts.

  1. Longevity

When weighing up your choices for a garden office, the price will always be a key element. But when thinking of the cost of each option, it’s important to consider the longevity each build type presents.

Some cheaper options may require lots of maintenance costs or only have a short lifespan. Taking all this into consideration will help you find the best garden office.

It’s also worth checking for guarantees.
